We love Rosemary & Co Paint Brushes for oils. They come from France but are wonderful and are a decent price for the quality you get. You can find similar brushes at Michales also, but I wanted to give you links to what I love most.

These Master's Choice Filberts These are a MUST for portraits in oils. Sizes 1,2 4, and 6

Thes Master's Choice Flats. Size 3-4

I also love these Robert Simons Hog Hair Brushes. Purchase through Dick Blick or Jerry's. I own sizes 2,4.6.8 in filbert.

Travel Info
The closest major airport is Norfolk International Airport, Virginia (ORF) which is about a two-hour drive to Corolla NC. Raleigh -Durham Airport NC is about a 4-5 hours drive.
Because the beach house is accessible only by 4 wheel drive, you may want to take a car service to Corolla from the airport and we will meet you at the realty office and drive you up the beach to the house. We may be able to help you coordinate your arrival times with the other beach girls coming to the retreat to share the cost of the car service.

There is parking for a small daily fee at the realty office in Corolla if you are driving. If you live within driving distance and have a 4WD vehicle, please  let us know.  Driving on the beach does take some practice and a wee bit of nerve, but can be fun if a few basic instructions are followed. I can forward info on this as needed.
(An all wheel drive vehicle will not make it up the beach because there is not enough clearance to get through most beach driving conditions.  I’ve seen AWD cars stuck in the sand more times than I can count and Larry the tow truck guy charges a fortune to haul you out.)

About the beautiful Outer Banks (OBX) North Carolina
By Christa Thomas, our host for the week

My Happy Place

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have been visiting the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks every summer since I was a kid.  My dad has lived  in the area for nearly 45 years and he has instilled in me a love for salty breezes and the warm gentle waves of the Atlantic.

The Outer Banks is a unique geographical area of barrier islands and peninsulas stretching down the North Carolina coast from the Virginia border.  This narrow, sandy band of land sits between the Atlantic ocean and a series of sounds and rivers, creating an amazing ecosystem of fresh and saltwater wild life and marine life.

My favorite place on earth sits at the far northern part of the Outer Banks, north of the town of Corolla where the pavement ends. Accessible only with a 4 wheel drive vehicle is a roughly 25 mile stretch of beach and dunes with no paved roads, no commercial development, just beach houses for vacationers and permanent residents.  Also resident in this area is a herd of wild horses, descendants of Spanish mustangs, stranded here over 500 years ago from shipwrecks along the shoals of the Outer Banks. The wild ponies roam free along the surf and in the dunes here, as this is a protected wildlife area.  The herd numbers around 100 and is carefully managed by a wonderful organization called the Corolla Wildl Horse Fund. For more information about these beautiful wild creatures, see their website www.corollawildhorsefund.org. In addition to the wild ponies, I’ve seen foxes, deer, rabbits, dolphins, sea turtles, pelicans, herons and more.

The OBX is a fantastic place to relax, unwind and live a casual and carefree boho beach girl  life, even if only for a week.  Our beach house is in the 4WD area north of Corolla.  We will be free of all distractions to focus on our art.  Unless you count the distraction of the gorgeous beach just a  few steps outside our door, seeing dolphins frolic just off shore, and waiting for the wild ponies to wander by on their way to cool off by the surf. Not to mention glorious sunrises over the Atlantic and technicolor sunsets every evening. Carolina blue skies, warm ocean breezes and sandy feet are my idea of heaven.
We will be staying in the area known as Carova Beach  We will drive on the beach itself to reach this gorgeous ocean front property. Driving on the beach is a fun adventure and can only be done with a 4WD vehicle. September is a fabulous time to visit the OBX.  The beaches are far less crowded, but the weather and water are still warm and welcoming.

I can’t wait to share with y’all my love for this magical place, so grab your paint brushes and some sun screen, we are going to have an amazing adventure!
